Caddying for his father encouraged him to take up the game at the age of 11. Davis won the English Amateur Stroke Play Championship while still a teenager in 1984, turning professional two years later.

Finished inside the top 100 on the Order of Merit eight times securing victories in 1991 and 1994.

Dogged by injuries but returned to winning ways on the Senior Tour in 2014 at the Scottish Senior Open.
