A consistent performer on the Senior Tour, the New Zealander recorded two top 20 finishes in 2009 en route to 53rd place in the Order of Merit. Confirmed his return to form by winning the 2007 Sharp Italian Seniors Open via a four-man play-off, his first title for six years following his maiden breakthrough at the 2001 Tunisian Seniors Open, which he also won in extra holes. Enjoyed a much improved season in 2006, closing out the year with a share of fourth place at the Arcapita Seniors Tour Championship to finish 17th on the Order of Merit. Nearly added to his only previous title when he was tied second at the 2006 Irvine Whitlock Seniors Classic in Jersey, one of four top tens that year. Won twice on The European Tour in the 1974 German Open and the 1976 Double Diamond Stroke Play, but is best remembered for finishing second behind Jack Nicklaus in The 1978 Open Championship at St Andrews. Represented New Zealand in three World Cups and two Alfred Dunhill Cups, and was a regular on the Australasian and Asian Tours for many years. Turned 50 in December 2000, and promptly won the 2001 New Zealand Seniors PGA Championship by ten shots from Barry Vivian, before selling his farm to finance his first sortie on the European Senior Tour.
