Henrik Stenson has been named The Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Month for November following his stunning, successful season-ending defence of the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.
Stenson, who receives an engraved alms dish and a Jeroboam of Moët & Chandon champagne, achieved a personal first by making a successful defence of a title on The European Tour International Schedule.
The 38 year old Swede, who secured Number One honours on The 2013 Race to Dubai with his victory in that year’s DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, won the tournament for a second successive year with a brilliant birdie-birdie finish on the Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates.
Stenson said: “It was great to end my European Tour season on a high after winning again in Dubai, and now by winning the Golfer of the Month award. It must’ve been a close call with Brooks – his win in Turkey was very impressive – but I’m grateful to have got the vote.
“I’ve won a few of these awards now, but you never get tired of winning anything. It makes you want to work harder and have that winning feeling again and again. Hopefully I can add a few more trophies to my cabinet next season.”
The European Tour Golfer of the Month Panel, comprising members of the Association of Golf Writers as well as commentators from television and radio, focused their attention on winning and exceptional performances on The European Tour International Schedule, whilst also considering achievements worldwide.
American Brooks Koepka provided competition to Stenson when he held off the challenge of Ian Poulter to capture the Turkish Airlines Open by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, following which he was named The 2014 Sir Henry Cotton European Tour Rookie of The Year.
Derek Lawrenson, Golf Correspondent of the Daily Mail and Chairman of the Association of Golf Writers, said: “There have been some terrific debates for The European Tour Golfer of the Month and this was right up there with the best of them with Henrik edging the decision by one vote.”
Iain Carter, BBC Golf Correspondent, said: “Henrik started the week in Dubai by placing self-imposed pressure when highlighting that he had not before defending a title. Brooks produced an outstanding performance in Dubai, but Henrik’s nerveless defence against the best players in the world eventually earned him the award.”
Spain’s Miguel Ángel Jiménez (December), Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher (January), France’s Victor Dubuission (February), Welshman Jamie Donaldson (March), Alexander Levy (April), Rory McIlroy (May, July and August), Germany’s Martin Kaymer (June), Ireland’s Paul McGinley (September) and England’s Oliver Wilson (October) have also won The Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Month awards this year.
