Four players shared the lead after the first round of the European Tour Qualifying School First Stage Section A at The Roxburghe Hotel and Golf Course in Scotland.
Scots Neil Fenwick and Neil Henderson, Englishman Reece Phillips and Welshman Rhys Enoch all signed for four under par rounds of 68 at the Kelso venue to make a promising start to the long qualification campaign, which could culminate in exemption for The 2016 Race to Dubai.
Northern Irishman Alan Dunbar, the 2012 Amateur Champion, also started well with a 69 to share fifth place with England’s Charlie Simpson and Scotland’s Mark Hillson.
At the other Section A venue, Fleesensee Golf and Country Club in Germany, Sebastian Heisele led the way on home soil alongside Swede Richard Pettersson at five under par – the latter finishing eagle, birdie, bogey.
Another German, Dominik Pietzsch, was one stroke back, with six players including Denmark’s Mark F Haastrup, a former winner on the Challenge Tour, sharing fourth place on three under.
After four rounds, the top 23 players and ties from Fleesensee and the top 18 and ties from The Roxburghe will progress to the Second Stage, which will be played across four Spanish venues in November.
The drama will once again climax at the PGA Catalunya Resort near Girona, Spain, from November 14-19, where the top 25 players and ties will earn a European Tour card for 2016.
