Gerard Piris Mateu carded 11 birdies during a second round of 62 to charge up the leaderboard at First Stage Qualifying Section D at Bogogno Golf Resort.
The Spaniard followed up a one under par opening 71 with a remarkable round which included five birdies and a bogey over the front nine and six further gains over the back nine, taking the 28 year old to 11 under par overall.
Also in the hunt in Italy is the Czech Republic’s Michal Pospisil, who trails Mateu by one after a second consecutive score of 67 took him to ten under par overall.
The 110 players taking part at Bogogno this week are competing to finish inside the top 21, who will progress to the Second Stage in Spain next month.
Meanwhile at Frilford Heath, England’s Peter Tarver Jones leads the way by a single stroke after a three under par 69 took him to seven under par overall.
Also impressing in England was Northern Ireland’s Colin Fairweather, whose blemish-free score of 66 took him into the top ten at the competition’s halfway stage.
This week the top 20 and ties will progress to Second Stage from Abingdon.
