Montgomerie said: "The Volvo PGA Championship is very important. It’s the European Tour’s major, and I would obviously like to win the title."

Costantino Rocca, who captured the Volvo PGA Championship in 1996, will join recent winners Seve Ballesteros (1983, 1991), Bernhard Langer (1987, 1993, 1995), Ian Woosnam (1988, 1997) and José Maria Olazábal (1994), all winners of major championships, in the field.

Rocca said: "The Volvo PGA Championship is the most important tournament in Europe after the Open Golf Championship so to win it in 1996 meant so much to me."
