JUSTIN ROSE – FIRST ROUND – 67 (-4)
I’m happy with that score. The story of the round is that I putted well for a change. I brought out the trusty old putter I used at Birkdale and which I’ve always used at the Tour School in my hour of need. If I’m struggling, I usually revert to the old Scottie Cameron. I’ve had it for three years – just before the Open at Birkdale in fact.
Don’t ask me why I don’t use it more often if it’s so good. I don’t have an answer. Professionals are stupid, I suppose! We are always looking for something and that’s why we keep changing.
I had a bit of flu last week and never got to grips with the tournament. Couldn’t get my head round it mentally. I think missing the cut gave me a kick up the backside. I’d got stuck in a routine of finishing about 20th and that’s not good enough. I’ve been on the board without making any real progress. I think I was forcing it and not letting it happen, which I did last night and this morning.
