Ogilvy Stands Tall to Claim US Open title
Australia’s Geoff Ogilvy was the last man standing at Winged Foot to claim the US Open title after the victory hopes of both Phil Mickelson and Colin Montgomerie were dashed on the final hole. Ogilvy got up and down at the last for a final round of 72 and a five over par total of 285, one better than Montgomerie, Mickelson and Jim Furyk. Padraig Harrington was a further shot adrift on seven over par for a closing 71.
Ferrie and Mickelson Tied at Winged Foot
England’s Kenneth Ferrie goes into the final round of first US Major Championship tied for the lead with US PGA and Masters Champion Phil Mickelson hoping to become the first European in 36 years to win the US Open. Ferrie leads a magnificent cast of eight European Tour Members within five strokes of the lead at Winged Foot Golf Club.
Montgomerie Heads European Tour Assault on Winged Foot
Colin Montgomerie remains in contention for his Major Championship title as he goes into the weekend at the 106th US Open at Winged Foot one behind leader Steve Stricker of America. The Scot leads a strong European Tour challenge which includes ten Members in the top 20 within six shots of the lead.
Montgomerie One Clear at Winged Foot
Colin Montgomerie stands alone as the only player under par after the first round of the US Open Championship after an opening 69 at Winged Foot left him one clear of the current European Number One, David Howell, Spain’s Miguel Angel Jiménez and the American trio of Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Steve Stricker.
Montgomerie Sets Early Pace to Lead US Open
Scotland's Colin Montgomerie rolled back the years with a vintage US Open performance to take an early one stroke lead at Winged Foot Golf Club after a one under par 69 left him the only player among the morning starters to finish in red figures. The 2005 European Number One lies one shot ahead of the American duo of Jim Furyk and Phil Mickelson, who is aiming for a third successive Major title following his victories in last year’s US PGA Championship and the Masters Tournament in April.
Campbell Defends US Open Crown
Just over a year ago, Michael Campbell attended a US Open Championship qualifier at Walton Heath in England more in hope than expectation. A birdie putt at the 36th and final green secured a place among the elite competing at Pinehurst No.2 ten days later. Two weeks on, he was a Major Champion. Who said golf is a funny game?
