The Ryder Cup star made the cut on the mark after opening with two level par 71s, but was going much better on his third crack at the Oceânico Victoria.
The Italian birdied the first, third and fifth to turn in 32, before further gains at the 11th, 12th and 15th to reach six under with two to play.
That was four behind overnight leader Ross Fisher, who was ten under at the halfway stage.
Australian Andrew Dodt was also going well as he reached five under for both the day and the tournament through 12 holes.
