Two-time Major Champion Retief Goosen was the guest of honour at the Opening Ceremony of the Volvo Golf Champions, held on the first tee of Durban Country Club on Thursday morning.

Goosen was joined by Guy Kinnings, Global Co-Managing Director, IMG Golf; Per Ericsson, President of Volvo Event Management Deputy; Tokozile Xasa, Minister of Tourism, South African Government; Michael Mabuyakhulu, MEC for Economic Development and Tourism, KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government; and Collins Chabane, Minister in The Presidency: Performance, Monitoring and Evaluation as well as Administration.

Goosen, making his competitive comeback this week after a five-month absence following back surgery, was an apt choice to open the €2million event given his recent appointment as the golfing ambassador for the Province of KwaZulu-Natal.

After giving Mr Mabuyakhulu some swing tips, Goosen stepped aside to allow the MEC for Economic Development and Tourism and Mr Ericsson to hit the ceremonial first tee shots, which were perhaps marginally less specular than the accompanying fireworks.

Ten minutes later, South African Darren Fichardt – winner of last year’s Najeti Hotels et Golfs Open – got the competitive action underway with a crisp drive down the first. The Volvo Golf Champions was off and running…
