The 2013 Maybank Malaysian Open will carry an increased prize fund of US$2.75million when the event returns to Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC), in the Malaysian capital, from March 21-24.
The tournament promoters, GlobalOne, have announced that the prize purse will rise by US$250,000 for the 52nd edition of the event, which has formed part of The European Tour International Schedule since 1999.
The premier event has attracted star players from across the globe, with the likes of the 2012 champion Louis Oosthuizen and his fellow Major Champions Martin Kaymer and Charl Schwartzel all competing in recent seasons.
Maybank, the title sponsor of the world-class event, has played a pivotal role in expanding the reach of the game in the country and region.
Mohamed Adam Wee, Chief Marketing Officer of Maybank, spoke of Maybank’s delight in sponsoring the event, and of the prize purse increase.
He said: “We are in our eighth year of sponsoring the Maybank Malaysian Open, and will be upping the ante of by offering a prize purse of US$2.75 million. We are confident that this will fire up the competitive spirit of the golfers, so that spectators can also expect an electrifying tournament come March 2013.”
The event’s custodians, the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA), echoed those sentiments.
Admiral (R) Tan Sri Dato' Setia Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor, President of the Malaysian Golf Association, said: “The Maybank Malaysian Open has established itself as one of the major golf events to look out for. In this region, it is a golf event that has drawn international players and spectators alike, due to its world-class status. The increase in prize money will definitely up the prestige of the event.”
The Maybank Malaysian Open was the first tournament in Asia to be co-sanctioned by The European and Asian Tours in 1999, when Gerry Norquist won the event.
