Thomas Levet birdied the first five holes of his final round at St Andrews to take the lead in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
The 45 year old, without a top-20 finish all season, made a brilliant start over the Old Course at the Home of Golf to race to 21 under par.
That saw him dislodge American overnight leader Peter Uihlein, who started with a bogey in the three-course pro-am event that has also seen competitors compete at Carnoustie and Kingsbarns this week.
Seven players were clinging on to Levet’s coattails, with Uihlein, Ireland’s Shane Lowry, English pair David Howell and Tom Lewis, former Open Champion Darren Clarke, 2010 winner Martin Kaymer and Argentina’s Ricardo Gonzalez all two back on 19 under.
In total 23 players were within five shots as an exciting finish beckoned.
