Craig Lee may not have been in contention to win the Portugal Masters but he could not have picked a better time to secure his second best result of the season.
The Scotsman picked up birdies on his final two holes at Oceånico Victoria Golf Club to move from a share of 16th to a share of sixth and importantly pick up a cheque for 60,000 euros.
And while he finished 11 shots behind winner Andy Sullivan, Lee moved from 120th to 104th in the Race to Dubai, moving into the top 110 ahead of next week's cut off for keeping playing privileges at the UBS Hong Kong Open.
Lee is familiar with the battle to keep hold of his card, having finished 107th last season, and he was pleased to have given himself some breathing space before heading to Hong Kong Golf Club.
I'm delighted obviously. I needed a big week somewhere along the line - Craig Lee
"Obviously look at the Dunhill, huge prize money last week, and a big week didn't arrive but coming to this week, always nervous at this time of year, especially when you're chasing," he said.
"From years gone by, I've generally been in a pretty good position, inside the top 110 or round about 110, but this year is different because I was 120th, which money-wise is actually quite a long way away.
"Definitely on to Hong Kong. It will make Hong Kong a little bit easier now, not needing a top 15 or top ten is going to make life a little bit easier. But there's still a lot of pressure on but nice to be coming off a high going into next week, as opposed to finishing badly and trying to pick yourself up.
"That will make the next two days' commute a little easier."
Lee's best finish of the season so far is a tie for third at the Tshwane Open but he recently registered two top tens at the D+D REAL Czech Masters and M2M Russian Open and he was glad to see his hard work pay off.
"I've been telling myself to go for it for about eight weeks now and it's never quite materialised," he said.
"I got off to a really good start today and sort of settled me down and focused on that. Every time I looked up and saw the leaderboard, everybody was getting birdies, as well. They were running away as much as I was trying to catch them.
"In the end I managed to get to 12 under, which is quite good."
