Tournament History

Golf has only featured in the Olympic Games official programme on two previous occasions, Paris in 1900 and St Louis, Missouri in 1904. On both occasions a Men's Individual Competition was held. In 1900 12 players competed in a 36 hole stroke play event with American Charles Sands taking home the Gold Medal. In 1904 the format of the competition was changed to match play and it was Canadian George Lynn who won the Gold. After a one hundred and twelve year gap the best players in the world will once again compete for Olympic Gold on Brazil's South Atlantic Coast.
