This will be the 15th time since the turn of the century that Travis Perkins, the Northampton-based builders’ merchant, has sponsored a tournament on the Staysure (formerly Senior) Tour.
To celebrate this special landmark at Woburn Golf Club, all public admission charges will be waived on Day One of the 2018 edition of a tournament which has been watched by around a quarter of a million spectators since its inception in 2002.
Travis Perkins began its involvement in senior golf at Wentworth Club when the Travis Perkins Senior Masters was contested four times between 2002 and 2005.
Then in 2008 Travis Perkins took over the title sponsorship of the existing Senior event at Woburn Golf Club, and the outstanding Duke’s Course has continued to be the recognised home of the Travis Perkins Masters from 2008 until the present day.
‘Free Friday’ on August 31 will celebrate 15 cumulative years of Travis Perkins’ involvement in senior golf, and promises to be a fabulous, fun day for all the family in the midst of the school holidays. England’s Philip Golding defends the title he won in 2017 over the renowned Duke’s Course close to the famous Woburn Abbey and Safari Park.
Tickets for the final two days on Saturday, September 1 and Sunday, September 2 are priced £10 in advance and £15 on the gate. Priority parking is available in advance for £10 daily, including a free programme and draw sheet, while general public parking is free of charge. Under-16s are also admitted free.
The tournament has grown in popularity over the past decade at Woburn and played host to enthusiastic and knowledgeable galleries who have enjoyed watching the legends of the game at close quarters.
Among the list of champions is 2010 Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie, who completed a hat-trick of successes between 2013 and 2015, and Des Smyth of Ireland and England’s Carl Mason, with two wins apiece.
The Duke of Bedford, President of Woburn Golf Club, welcomed the ‘Free Friday’ initiative, saying: “We welcome the initiative from Travis Perkins and the Staysure Tour which we hope will encourage more people to come along and enjoy watching some live golf.”
John Carter, Chief Executive Officer for Travis Perkins plc, said: “’Free Friday’ is a great initiative and we hope it will inspire more people to come along and watch their sporting legends in action whilst enjoying the wonderful surroundings of Woburn Golf Club.”
David MacLaren, Head of the Staysure Tour, endorsed the Duke’s comments. He said: “We are indebted to Travis Perkins plc and CEO, John Carter, for their continued support over a cumulative 15 editions of this well-respected tournament. The Travis Perkins Masters has, for many seasons, been a key component in our tournament schedule and remains a popular fixture in the first year of our new and exciting partnership with Staysure.
“All of our Members enjoy returning each year to Woburn Golf Club, which is such a welcoming environment for golfers of all ages and levels of ability. We are delighted to open our doors to the public on ‘Free Friday’ so that golf fans, old and young, can watch top class senior competition at close quarters.”
Defending champion, Phil Golding, who claimed the fourth title of his senior career by beating American Clark Dennis and Ireland’s Brendan McGovern by one stroke last year, added: “As professional golfers, we all love to play in front of a large audience and this initiative to create ‘Free Friday’ is something we all welcome. I would like to think that it will encourage families to come to Woburn and enjoy the beautiful setting and some top-class golf – and hopefully return to watch at the weekend.”Tickets for the weekend’s play on September 1 and 2, and priority parking on any of the three tournament days, are available now on www.europeantour.com/tickets
