Five things to know: The Senior Open Presented by Rolex

The year’s final Senior Major Championship is upon us, and with over-50s golf now entering a ‘golden era’ we get you ready for the pressure-packed week ahead.

Royal Lytham & St Annes

For the first time in 25 years, The Senior Open Presented by Rolex will return to the famed Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club. The historic venue, which was established in 1886, has hosted The Open Championship 11 times, the Women’s British Open five times, and this year, will add a fifth Senior Open to the esteemed list of championships it has staged.

Lehman’s Lytham

Tom Lehman will have winning memories to draw from this week as he returns to the site of his thrilling victory in The Open in 1996. The American will be the only player in the field to have triumphed on the Lancashire links in professional competition. However, he will not be the only competitor to have captained a Ryder Cup team. The Team USA Captain from 2006 will be joined by former Team Europe captains, Bernhard Langer, Paul McGinley, Colin Montgomerie and Ian Woosnam.

Looking to complete the double

Tom Watson, who will make an astounding 18th appearance at The Senior Open this week, is considered by many to be the greatest links golfer in history. The World Golf Hall of Fame Member has collected five Claret Jugs and three Senior Open Trophies, and remarkably, still remains a threat to win another Senior Major.

Looking to join the links legend in an ultra-exclusive club of players are Darren Clarke, Paul Lawrie, Tom Lehman and Sandy Lyle. Should any of them go on to win this week, they would become only the fourth player—after Gary Player, Bob Charles and Watson—to have won both The Open and The Senior Open.

Happening Now

Former Scotland rugby union international Andy Nicol will host Q&A sessions with golfers taking part in this year’s Senior Open on the first three days of the championship, Thursday to Saturday.

The afternoon sessions will give spectators the opportunity to turn panellist and ask legends of the game questions about their history in golf, tips, thoughts on the current superstars and whatever else comes to mind.

The Senior Open Trophy

The Claret Jug is one of the oldest and most revered prizes in all of golf, but the stunning Senior Open Trophy stands with impressive beauty as the most coveted award in the over-50s game.
