Bernhard Langer sealed another vintage season by winning the US Champions Tour’s Schwab Cup points race for the first time, also winning the Player of the Year award and topping the money list for a third consecutive year.
The 2004 Ryder Cup winning Captain posted a final round 69 to finish tied third with fellow European Senior Tour Member David Frost in the Champions Tour’s season season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship at TPC Harding Park, in San Francisco.
That was good enough to wrap up the Schwab Cup points race and a $1 million bonus, ahead of Fred Couples – the only player who could have caught him – who closed with a 67 to share tenth place.
American John Cook retained his Charles Schwab Cup Championship title but it was Langer who continued his dominance of senior golf, winning the Arnold Palmer Award as the Champions Tour's leading money-winner.
The German former World Number One is the third player to lead the money list three times, following Don January (1980, 83, 84) and Hale Irwin (1997, '98, 2002) but the first to achieve it consecutively. He also picked up the Jack Nicklaus Trophy as the Champions Tour's Player of the Year for the third season in succession.
Langer’s marvellous 2010 season included back-to-back Senior Majors, first winning The Senior Open presented by MasterCard at Carnoustie, when he held off the challenge of Corey Pavin, followed by the US Senior Open the week after.
“Looking back it's been an unbelievable year," said Langer. “The thing I hadn't done so far was win the Schwab Cup, so this was a big deal for me. To come out on top is a great feeling and it's worth all the hard work over the years.”
“I came out here three years ago trying to be one of the dominant players. I had no clue that this was going to happen."
