Double delight for Wesselingh

After his victory at the Fubon Senior Open, former club professional Paul Wesselingh travelled to Mauritius in 2013 with a chance to lift the John Jacobs Trophy. He moved to the top of the Order of Merit with victory in Taiwan but wasn’t planning to rest on his laurels at the final event of the season.

With rounds of 67-66-69 on the Legend Course at Constance Belle Mare Plage, Wesselingh finished five strokes clear of South Africa’s David Frost to claim the MCB Tour Championship and the John Jacobs Trophy in just his second season on the Senior Tour.

Former Ryder Cup Captain Colin Montgomerie won the John Jacobs Trophy when he topped the Order of Merit in 2014. The following year, the Scot returned to the island to defend his crown and he did so in superb style on the Legend Course.

After the first round, Montgomerie was three shots off the pace. But on the second day he produced a masterclass in golf as he equalled the course record, carding a seven under par 64. His incredible round included five birdies and a hole-in-one on the par three 17th hole.

The first edition of the MCB Tour Championship was in fact the curtain raiser for the 2010 season before it was moved to the end of the Senior Tour calendar.

It was played just a month after the former season-closing event, where Kevin Spurgeon finished tied for 37th out of a field of 42. He finished 31st in the 2009 Order of Merit, but that result was quickly overlooked as he fought back on the final day of the inaugural MCB Open to win the title by one shot from Gordon J Brand.

During the final round of the 2011 MCB Tour Championship, it looked as though David Frost’s bid for the title was over.
Roger Chapman, who has since won two Senior Major Championships, overhauled a four-shot deficit to take a two stroke lead on to the final hole.

Chasing down Chapman on the 18th, Frost struck a three iron to 15 feet which he rolled home for an eagle three and a final round score of 69, forcing a play-off with Chapman who parred the last.

No stranger to winning on the big stage, former Open Champion Tom Lehman took the lead after the first round of the 2011 MCB Tour Championship and remained at the top of the leaderboard as he won his second Senior Tour title by one shot.

The 2006 United States Ryder Cup Captain’s previous win had come the year before at the US Senior PGA Championship, and the American was invited to participate in the season-ending championship at Constance Belle Mare Plage.

He carded a final round 71 for a 12 under par total, denying David Frost, who he beat in a play-off to win the 2010 Major, a second-consecutive title.
