Spain's Miguel Angel Jiménez carded a first round of 68, two under par, at the U.S. Senior Open Championship, leading the European charge as he sits two strokes behind overnight leader Jerry Kelly.
The 54 year old started his round at The Broadmoor three under par after the first three holes, but moved to one under after a double bogey on the fourth hole. Two more birdies cancelled out a bogey as he made the turn two under par.
He bogeyed the tenth hole, but cancelled that out with his fourth birdie of the day as he remained two under par.The Spaniard shares second place with Americans Rocco Mediate and Kevin Sutherland and South African Deane Pappas.
"The golf course is tough, even in the morning when conditions were amazing," said Jiménez. "You finish under par, it's good - especially on this golf course. You can't miss a fairway because you have rough to control, then all of a sudden you find yourself going past the hole and you have a putt that is not easy.
"My eagle on the second was nice. I hit a five wood and then sand wedge. I saw Jerry hit before me and he hit it three metres next to the hole - I told my caddie 'that's the spot'. I hit it three metres to the right-hand side of the hole and it went in."
In a share of 15th place on one over par are Staysure Tour members Paul Broadhurst, who won his second Senior Major at the KitchenAid PGA Seniors Championship in May, David Frost, Barry Lane, Prayad Marksaeng and Colin Montgomerie.
One stroke further back on two over par are Philip Golding, Bernhard Langer and Vijay Singh.
