Defending champion Colin Montgomerie is one shot behind leader Tom Lehman at the halfway mark of the US Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid after a three under par second round of 69.
The Scot posted five birdies and two bogeys at French Lick, Indiana, to move to three under par for the championship, with playing partner Lehman setting the pace following a superb round of 67.
There have been only seven rounds in the 60s, all of which came with milder weather conditions prevailing Friday, when tournament officials trimmed more than 100 yards off the first-round setup, from 7,040 yards to 6,914.
But Montgomerie is ideally placed to defend his title, in a share of second place with Brian Henninger, and he is looking forward to continuing his battle with former Open Champion Lehman over the weekend.
“Tom was exceptional, shooting 67,” he said. “I did okay, 69. So we stood in there battling around, I'm going to play with him tomorrow, and I look forward to doing that. All in all, so far, so far, so good.
He added: “I’m in the position that I wanted to be in - in contention going into the weekend. That's all I'm trying to do.”
European Senior Tour members Jean François Remesy and Peter Fowler are tied for sixth position with American Woody Austin on even par after rounds of 72 and 67 respectively, while Bernhard Langer is a further shot back on one over par following a 72.
