Former Ryder Cup stars have the upper hand in the United States

Although Europe suffered their first defeat in four matches at this year’s Ryder Cup, European Senior Tour members and former Ryder Cup stars are continuing to dominate on the PGA TOUR Champions circuit.

Paul Broadhurst and Bernhard Langer

Former Ryder Cup Captain, and ten-time player, Bernhard Langer is leading the charge in the Schwab Cup standings in his bid for a third consecutive season title – his fourth overall.

He has a lead of more than $1million at the top of the rankings and has been the most consistent player in America this season, winning four events and finishing inside the top ten on a further 11 occasions.

His lowest finish in 18 events on the PGA TOUR Champions in 2016 has been tied 13th – Langer has finished runner-up twice and third on three occasions.

The 59 year old leads the Schwab Cup standings by over $1million from Ryder Cup regular Miguel Angel Jiménez.

The Spaniard, who was part of Langer’s team at the 2004 Ryder Cup, has accrued almost $1.5million in winnings this season from just nine events, and was victorious at the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic presented by C Spire in March.

Like Langer, the 52 year old has been in stellar form this season, finishing no lower than tied 11th. He has finished runner-up on four occasions and tied third twice, including the Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex at Carnoustie.

Colin Montgomerie, Ryder Cup Captain in 2010, rose up the rankings last week after his first victory of the season at the Pacific Links Bear Mountain Championship.

The Scot is also in contention for a third successive John Jacobs Trophy, as he sits in second place on the European Senior Tour Order of Merit.

Just outside the top 20 is Sweden’s Jesper Parnevik, who turned 50 last year. The three-time Ryder Cup player won his first title on the over-50s circuit earlier this year at the Insperity Invitational.

After playing in just seven events, Senior Open champion Paul Broadhurst sits in 24th place.

The former Ryder Cup star made his over-50s debut at the Prostate Cancer UK Scottish Senior Open in 2015 and then shot to stardom after his famous victory at Carnoustie.

In just his fourth PGA TOUR Champions event, the 51 year old became just the third golfer in history to achieve tournament victories at both Carnoustie and Pebble Beach as he won the Nature Valley First Tee Open.

With just five events of the PGA TOUR Champions season remaining, there’s every chance that our Senior Tour members can further improve on what has already been a dominant year.
