Rounded a fine 2011 season off in style by winning the MCB Tour Championship in Mauritius, having topped the US Champions Tour Money List. Captured his maiden Senior Major Championship when he defeated David Frost and Fred Couples in a play-off to win the 2010 US Senior PGA Championship at Colorado Golf Club. Captained the United States at The 36th Ryder Cup at The K Club in Ireland in September 2006, but could not prevent a record-equalling defeat at the hands of Ian Woosnam’s European Team. Has competed three times in The Ryder Cup as a player, in 1995, 1997 and 1999, the latter as a wild card selection. Played on the US PGA Tour without much success from 1983 to 1985. Took an assistant professional job in California and turned down the chance to become golf coach to the University of Minnesota because it meant he had to sell skiing equipment in the winter. Travelled the country in a battered old car with 180,000 miles on the clock in the early 1990s as he was so strapped for cash. Played the Hogan Tour in 1991, winning three times and hasn't looked back since. Runner-up to José Maria Olazábal in the 1994 Masters Tournament but stepped into the limelight in the Major Championship arena when he won The Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes in 1996, helped largely by a third round 64. Topped the US PGA Tour Money List that season. Won at Loch Lomond on The European Tour in 1997 but damaged a shoulder on the eve of 1998 Open at Royal Birkdale and the injury curtailed his appearances in early 1999. Ended a three year drought on the US PGA Tour by capturing the Phoenix Open early in the 2000 season.
