McGee excited to tee it up on home soil at Irish Challenge

Ruaidhri McGee is hoping to continue his excellent recent form when he tees it up on home soil in week’s Irish Challenge at The K Club.

The 31-year-old has two top tens in his five outings this season, including a runner-up finish at the Blot Open de Bretagne, and has his eye on going one better in County Kildare this week.

The K Club is a venue which the Irishman knows well and he is hoping to use that to his advantage when the actions begins on Thursday.

“It’s great,” he said. “Any chance I can get to come home, I just love it so much. It’s amazing.

“Ireland, it’s just the people. Everybody is just so friendly and the K Club, it’s an amazing property. The two courses are unbelievable, so much history with the European Open and the Ryder Cup, it’s a beautiful hotel, it doesn’t get much better.

“I feel like it’s going well. I’ve been a bit hard on myself trying to get the win, but I’ve only played five events so to be where I am, I’m pretty happy.”

McGee was effusive in his praise of the course set up, which with favourable conditions could see some low scoring across the tournament.

“The course is immaculate. It’s a real treat to play it,” he said.

“The conditions are perfect; the greens are beautiful and hopefully the weather’s good. Any chance you get to play in front of any crowds is great but being Irish and being at home it’ll be really nice.”

McGee currently sits 27th on the Road to Mallorca Rankings, which are led by Sweden’s Jens Dantorp following his excellent performance on the DP World Tour at the Cazoo Classic last week.

The action will begin at 7.30am local time on Thursday July 28, with the Irishman playing alongside Denmark’s Martin Simonsen and Poland’s Mateusz Gradecki at 1.20pm.
