With the new season fast approaching we are profiling some of the best players from Europe’s four satellite tours. Here we take a look at how Axel Boasson became the first ever Icelandic winner of the Nordic Golf League last year.
The 27 year old made history last year on the third tier circuit, winning two titles and finishing inside the top ten on nine further occasions during 20 starts – making him the highest-ranked Icelandic golfer in the world.
Boasson, who attended Mississippi State University before joining the paid ranks in 2015, excelled last year, first winning the SM Match – a historic match play event in Sweden – then going on to triumph in the 12 Twelve Championship, an innovative competition featuring four 12-hole rounds.
The Icelander also thrived in stroke play events in 2017. After challenging in both the Kellers Park Masters and the Lannalodge Open, where he finished as a runner-up on both occasions, Boasson also competed in a three-man play-off at the season-ending Kristianstad Åhus Open.
Although beaten by Sweden’s Niklas Lemke in the season-ending play-off, Boasson finished the campaign €12,000 clear of his nearest rival Christopher Feldborg Nielsen and was crowned the Nordic Golf League’s Player of the Year after his second full season on the third tier tour.
With his fellow countryman Birgir Hafthorsson becoming the first Icelander to win on the Challenge Tour last season, Boasson will be hoping he can bring home more silverware back to his homeland in 2018.
