Simonsen seals wire-to-wire triumph in Brno

Martin Simonsen posted a closing four under par round of 67 to seal his maiden European Challenge Tour title in wire-to-wire fashion at the Kaskáda Golf Challenge.

The Dane held at least part of the lead after every round at Kaskáda Golf Resort and he closed out victory by reaching 20 under par, four clear of England’s Marco Penge who finished second on 16 under par.

The 30-year-old was forced to deal with tricky winds throughout the final day and was pleased with how he kept the bogeys off his card to make it a Danish double in the Czech Republic, following countryman Nicolai Kristensen's victory at the D+D REAL Czech Challenge earlier this month.

“I feel great,” he said. “It was a tough day out there so I’m very pleased to be done with it, but it was a lot of fun.

“It means a lot. I’ve had a couple of chances in the last few weeks and I was quite disappointed in the last Czech event that I finished off poorly. I think that helped me today, so I’m really pleased.

“It’s tough not to think about the leaderboard and look a little bit, but I wasn’t sure what the lead was. I could see the guys I was playing with that I was a few ahead but I was just trying to hit one shot at a time. It sounds silly but that’s just what I was trying to do because five shots can go in a second out here, so I was trying to stay patient.

“I’m going to go and play with the kids, I’m really looking forward to that. Then I have a wine night with the boys on Saturday, so it’ll probably involve a little bit better wine now.”

Sweden’s Jens Dantorp continued his excellent run of form by making it back-to-back podium finishes on 13 under par, while fellow in-form man Jeremy Freiburghaus, of Switzerland, shared fourth place with Denmark’s Oliver Hundebøll, Frenchman Victor Riu and Germany’s Freddy Schott on 12 under par.

Germany’s Jannik de Bruyn posted a seven under par round of 64 to join Austria’s Niklas Regner and Spaniard Borja Virto in a tie for eighth place on 11 under par.

Victory in the Czech Republic means Simonsen climbs to third place on the Road to Mallorca Rankings on 67,729 points, 31,000 points off top spot.

The Road to Mallorca now travels to France for the Blot Open de Bretagne from June 23-26, 2022.
