Three to watch: KPMG Trophy

The KPMG Trophy begins tomorrow as Millennium Golf hosts a full field of rising and current stars. Here are three players to keep an eye on this week in Belgium.

Siem and Havret

Marcel Siem

The four-time European Tour winner has returned to the country of his best result this year. Three months ago, the German star made a deep run at the innovative Belgian Knockout, advancing through the strokeplay rounds before dispatching Irishman Gavin Moynihan in the round of 64, defeating Swede Rikard Karlberg by seven shots in the round 32 and then bettering Frenchman Antoine Rozner in the round of 16. The 39-year-old eventually fell in the quarter-final to Grégory Havret, but the tied-sixth result in Belgium will be a useful memory as he prepares to make his third Challenge Tour start this year.

Speaking of Havret, the Frenchman is also in the field this week at the KPMG Trophy. After defeating Siem in the quarter-finals, the three-time European Tour winner fell to Darius van Driel in the semi-finals, who won last week’s Rolex Trophy. It has been a fine campaign for Havret, who committed himself to playing a full season on the Challenge Tour in his bid to return to the European Tour. The 42-year-old may be one of the elder statesmen on the circuit, but he currently sits 13th in the Rankings and is still in search of a win this year, which seems to be coming any day now.

Gudmundur Kristjansson

You may not be familiar with the name of this 26-year-old from Iceland, but that is likely because he has only recently earned playing privileges on the Challenge Tour following an immediate promotion from the Nordic Golf League for recording three wins this season. He made the cut in his first Challenge Tour start at the D+D REAL Slovakia Challenge, which came the week before his third win on the satellite tour. Kristjansson has proven he knows how to get the job done, so do not be surprised if you see his name near the top of the leaderboard this week at Millennium Golf.
