Figueiredo out to boost promotion chances in Spain

Pedro Figueiredo will be looking for his first HotelPlanner Tour win since 2018 at the Challenge de Catalunya this week at Fontanals Golf Club.

The Portuguese tees it up in Girona, as he has done on all of the 2026 Road to Mallorca events so far. Despite missing the cut in the opening three events of the season, Figueiredo’s game has been trending in the right direction, with a tied fourth place finish at the Italian Challenge Open last week his most impressive performance to date.

That result saw Figueredo reach tenth in the season-long Road to Mallorca Rankings with the 34-year-old looking for promotion to the DP World Tour for the second time in his career.

“It has been a strange start,” he said. “We had a big break and that was unexpected, so it’s really nice to be back, especially here in Fontanals. It’s a great course and there’s great conditions so it’s good to be back.

“It’s been a solid start for me so far. I actually started with three missed cuts but since then I had three good results and I’m happy with those and I’m looking forward to building on those in the coming weeks.

“It was a great week in Italy, I was really solid from tee to green, I had a couple of cold days on the greens on Friday and Saturday but I finished with a round of nine under on Sunday which raised me from 23rd to fourth place so I am really pleased with that Sunday, it gives me important points and puts me in a good position on the Rankings.”

Figueiredo is fully aware of the importance of a win to help improve his chances of once again playing on Golf’s Global Tour, with his last triumph coming at the KPMG Trophy eight years ago.

“A win would mean a lot to me,” he added. “My last win was in 2018, and that was eight years ago.

“You don’t win a lot in this sport so winning is always special, that’s what we work for, that’s why we practice, so it would mean a lot to get a victory and it would obviously help a lot to achieve the goal of getting that DP World Tour card at the end of the year.

“It’s a great course; it gives you two options of being either aggressive or conservative. I played decent last year, I finished tied 30th. It’s a fun course, a very fair one so I’ll stick to my game plan and hopefully have a good week.”

Figueiredo joins a strong field in Catalunya, which includes Road to Mallorca Number One MJ Daffue, former BMW PGA Championship winner Chris Wood and 21 Spaniards teeing it up on Thursday.

The first round of the Challenge de Catalunya gets under way at 8:00am local time on Thursday with Figueiredo teeing off at 3:15pm alongside Filip Mruzek from Czech Republic and German Alexander Knappe.
