Tomás Gouveia takes a three-stroke lead into day two of the Scottish Challenge supported by The R&A after firing an opening ten under par round of 61 at SCHLOSS Roxburghe.
The Portuguese, starting on the first, mixed nine birdies with an eagle, and dropped just one shot, to sit ahead of Irishman Liam Nolan and Scotsman Will Porter, who share second on seven under.
Gouveia started fast with gains on the second and third before his only dropped shot of the day came on the fourth. The Portuguese, however, was flawless for the remainder of his opening nine with four birdies in five holes helping him turn in five under (30).
The highlight of Gouveia’s round came on tenth with a hole-out eagle propelling him to seven under for the day before three further birdies capped his fine Thursday effort. “It was a great day,” he said. “Obviously, I did everything well. Scotland gave us a great day to play golf and I took advantage of that and I’m really happy with that.
“I was very happy to make the turn in 30. I didn’t start very well to be honest, I missed a few greens in the first few holes, but I was putting really well so managed to get away with some good scores.
“I kept hitting good shots and good putts and just kept rolling."
The 31-year-old was delighted with start in Kelso and admitted he did think 59 was possible after Dutchman Lars van der Vight achieved the feat at the German Challenge powered by VcG three weeks ago.
“After that birdie on 14 I thought about it,” he added. “The final stretch is really tough, there’s some really tough holes, so it didn’t happen, but it was just a great round.”
Gouveia earned a second-place finish at his first event on the 2026 Road to Mallorca at the Italian Challenge Open in May and has only broken inside the top 40 on one occasion since, at the Swiss Challenge.
“I haven’t been playing my best golf, but today, everything clicked," he said. “I’m hoping to continue with that. It’s very difficult to do it again tomorrow, I know it will be a very different round.
“I will just keep trying to put myself in position and try and make birdies. If the putts go in and I make good shots I think I think that can happen, so I will just try the same things.”
Scottish duo Ryan Lumsden and Marc Warren, Swede Christofer Rahm, German Anton Albers, Englishman Andrew Wilson and Van der Vight share fourth on six under par.
The second round of the Scottish Challenge supported by The R&A gets underway at 7:45am local time, with Gouveia teeing off alongside Maxence Giboudot and Victor Bjorlow at 7:55am.
