Considered a minor “Major” due to the size of the prize on offer, the SAINT OMER OPEN presented by Neuflize OBC is the only dual ranking event on the 2010 Challenge Tour Schedule. With a prize fund of €600,000 – which is more than twice as much as most regular events – a top three finish in Lumbres, north west France, virtually guarantees a player European Tour action for the following season, whilst a win means instant promotion to the top tier. Last year victory belonged to Christian Nilsson, who went one better than the previous year having finished runner-up behind England’s David Dixon in 2008. The Swede’s six-shot win was the greatest margin of victory on last year’s Challenge Tour, although low scoring is generally the exception rather than the rule. For whilst the picturesque golf course at Aa St Omer Golf Club may be one of the shorter tracks on the European Tour International Schedule, it is no less demanding for that. The hilly terrain can sometimes make life rather tricky for the players, with hanging lies and awkward stances a regular occurrence, whilst the fast, slopey greens can often also test the players’ skills as well as their patience.
