Became the first Challenge Tour graduate to win a Major Championship in 2005 when he won the U.S. Open Championship after holding off the challenge of Tiger Woods at Pinehurst No.2. Was the first New Zealander to win a Major since Bob Charles in 1963, prompting wonderful celebrations in his homeland. Parliament was even suspended as the Government watched the drama unfold and he was accorded a Welcome Home Parade in Wellington. Followed that by becoming only the fourth player to win the U.S. Open and the World Match Play Championship in the same year.

Not surprisingly, was named 2005 European Tour Golfer of the Year and given Honorary Life Membership of The European Tour in recognition of his US Open triumph. Previously honoured in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2001 where he received an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit Award for his services to golf.

A proud Maori by descent from the Ngati Ruanui tribe on his father's side and Nga Rauru tribe on his mother's and has historical links to Scotland through his great-great-great-grandfather Sir Logan Campbell who emigrated from Edinburgh to New Zealand in 1845. Founded the Michael Campbell Foundation to further his commitment to help, inspire and motivate young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
