Big finish has Winther eyeing Dubai

Jeff Winther fired the lowest round of his European Tour career on day four of the Mutuactivos Open de España and set his sights on the season ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.

The Dane graduated from the European Challenge Tour in 2015 and finished second at the Tshwane Open in his rookie campaign as he narrowly missed out on retaining his playing privileges.

A trio of successful trips to the Qualifying School have followed and he now has no concerns over his card for 2020 after a closing 63 handed him a top five finish at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.

Sitting 78th on the Race to Dubai Rankings Presented by Rolex, his next aim is to make it into the top 70 and qualify for the Turkish Airlines Open in November, but he is not looking to stop there.

"I've always been in that Tour School category so it's tough to get in the big events," he said. "I've gained a little confidence this year, it's just build on, build on, build on all the time.

I would love to try and go all the way through to the last event but we'll take one week at a time

"My first goal was to get into Turkey this year. I would love to try and go all the way through to the last event but we'll take one week at a time."

Winther dropped just one shot in his last 42 holes in Madrid, carding six birdies and an eagle on day four, and was delighted with his all round game.

"Everything from driver to putter to iron game, it was just consistent all the way through," he said. "I didn't really miss anything so it was good."

It was a good week for the Danes in Madrid, with countryman Joachim B Hansen carding a closing 66 to finish alongside Winther at 13 under.
