Is it Nacho's time?

For a long time Nacho Elvira looked like a European Tour winner in waiting. Then all of a sudden even he would admit that he didn't. After four seasons in the top 75 of the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex and three second places, it was a question of if not when the Spaniard would add a European Tour trophy to his four gained on the European Challenge Tour. But after over two years without a top ten and nine missed cuts in 11 events, it looked unlikely it would be this week. But class is permanent and after rounds of 64-67-66, the 34-year-old will take a six shot lead into round four, not that he is feeling the pressure. "To be honest, I don’t care at the moment," he said. "I struggled a bit the last year, year and a half, not with form but it’s golf - mentally, a little bit physically, battling with an injury. I’m happy playing golf again and being in the moment. To be in contention is a gift. It shows that the work I’ve been doing is paying off. We don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow but I’m happy with the way I am, to be honest."

The EDGA is back on the European Tour

Continuing the European Tour's relationship with the European Disabled Golf Association (EDGA) as part of the Golf For Good initiative, the EDGA European Tour got started on Saturday. Eight golfers from seven countries teed it up in the first of four 36 hole events to decide who will advance to the EDGA Dubai Finale at the end of the season. The same eight golfers will take part in the ISPS HANDA World Disability Invitational presented by Brendan Lawlor next week, with the top four over the two weeks heading to Jumeirah Golf Estates. A new field of eight will then play at the EDGA Hero Open and EDGA Cazoo Classic next month to determine the final four places in the final. Lawlor carded a 70 to lead by nine after day one.

Callum Shinkwin has been a boxer in his time so we know he will not go down without a fight. He is one of four players at ten under looking to chase down Elvira after he matched the lowest round of the week with a 63. That is the same score he produced in Cyprus last season to win his first European Tour title, and he is hoping the experience will stand him in good stead. "Nacho is a good player," he said. "When he’s in front he keeps going. The likelihood of catching him is not going to happen, but never say never. Winning is hard on the European Tour. There’s too many good players out there who can shoot good numbers on last days and come through. I was lucky enough to do that last year. You just have to wait for your time to come, you never know when it’s going to happen."
