Edoardo Molinari wins September Shot of the Month

Edoardo Molinari of Italy has won The European Tour Shot of the Month Award for September for his pin-point accuracy at the par five 15th hole during the final round of the Omega European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre.

The elder of the two Molinari brothers seemed to be losing out in his pursuit of Miguel Angel Jiménez when he stood three shots behind the Spaniard with four holes to play high in the Swiss Alps.

However, Molinari struck a superb iron shot to within two feet at the 516 yard 15th for an improbable eagle three which reduced the Spaniard’s lead to the minimum margin. Although Jiménez hit back to win the tournament, Molinari’s shot was judged the winner of the September contest.

In second place was the stroke which secured the title for Jiménez, a difficult approach to the 17th green from a fairway bunker which resulted in a birdie three. Third was José Manuel Lara’s curling 20 foot birdie putt to force a play-off with David Lynn, in which he prevailed at the first extra hole to capture the Austrian GolfOpen presented by Botarin.

The Shot of the Month is awarded to the Tour Member for the stroke judged to be the best played each month on The European Tour International Schedule. At the end of the season, the winning shot from each month will be nominated for The European Tour Shot of the Year Award.

The monthly winners to date in 2010 have been Martin Kaymer of Germany (January and August), England’s Ian Poulter (February), Noh Seung-yul of Korea (March), Lee Westwood of England (April), England’s Luke Donald (May), Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland (June) and Miguel Angel Jiménez of Spain (July).
