Fleetwood eagle sets up dramatic finale

The Apulia San Domenico Grand Final was set for a dramatic finale after an eagle on the 15th hole by Tommy Fleetwood put the Englishman within one shot of leader Andrea Pavan and in pole position to end the season as Challenge Tour Rankings Number One.

Pavan, who is sponsored by San Domenico Golf, was holding firm at the summit as he negotiated the opening 15 holes in level par.

The Roman came through the front nine unscathed after a bogey on the fifth hole was followed by a birdie on the sixth, and did go one under par for the day briefly with a birdie at the 11th before a bogey on the 14th left him level through 15 and 17 under for the tournament.

After a three over par front nine though, Fleetwood managed to get right back into contention with a birdie at the par five 11th  and an eagle at the 15th, putting him a shot clear in outright second place on 16 under.

Andrew Johnston was in third spot after reaching the 16th tee on one under for the day and 15 under for the tournament while Andrew Marshall, boosted by a hole in one on the third day, made a big jump to tied fourth, alongside Pelle Edberg and Sam Walker, after going three under par through 16 holes thanks to seven birdies and four bogeys.

Simon Thornton, meanwhile, was a happy man after his stunning seven under par round of 64 means he is certain to claim a card for The European Tour 2012 International Schedule having been under pressure to maintain his position in the top 20.
