Fleetwood sets his eyes on becoming European Number One again

Tommy Fleetwood has targeted a second Race to Dubai crown and wants to start with a strong performance at the Omega European Masters.

Betfred British Masters - Day Two

Tommy Fleetwood is eager to turn his consistency into victories as he looks to kickstart his campaign for a second Race to Dubai title at this week's Omega European Masters.

The Englishman has missed just a single cut on the European Tour since his last appearance at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club two years ago.

The 28-year-old has also had six top 20 finishes this season, including second at The Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club last month.

However, Fleetwood, who was European Number One in 2017, will have to see off a star-studded field in Switzerland as he begins the last stretch of the campaign.

World Number Two Rory McIlroy and his fellow Major Championship winners Sergio Garcia and Danny Willett have made the journey to Switzerland, with Matthew Fitzpatrick aiming to become the first player in the event's history to win three successive titles.

"With the opportunities coming up, if you're in the hunt until the end you've got a realistic chance," Fleetwood said.

"This definitely feels like the start to the run in to the end of the season. It's nice to have this stretch coming up, where with some good golf I could be in there again.

"The Race to Dubai is well ahead of most things. To be part of that Ryder Cup team with Fran (Francesco Molinari) and beat an American team that was so strong, was amazing.

"But on an individual level, the Race to Dubai is well up there. I realised last year how difficult it is to retain it and this year I will chase it again, so to win one when it's your time, it's so important. I can look back on that and be very happy."

Fleetwood's first three appearances at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club yielded top 20 finishes - including an impressive fifth placed finish in 2014.

He did not play in 2018, but the Englishman ensured he would not miss out on the 80th edition of the event.

"I missed this event last year and the last time I played was before my son Frankie was born," Fleetwood said.

"It's always such a beautiful place to come, everyone says it. You could talk about the venue all week. I've been looking forward to it because I missed out last year.

"That's the first time I missed it since I became a pro. I've struggled the last couple of times after it being somewhere that I had always played well.

"It's nice to be back with a different status. This week is a lot busier for me but that's something that I hope continues because I'm doing something right.

"It will be nice to come back with a clear mind and playing better again."
