Omani amateur relishing Classic opportunity

Azaan Al Ruhmy, Oman’s leading amateur, has received an invite for the Sultanate’s first ever professional golf tournament, the National Bank of Oman Golf Classic at Almouj Golf The Wave, Muscat, on October 24 – 27.

With his father, His Excellency Dr Mohammed Bin Hamad Al Rumhy, Oman’s Minister of Oil and Gas, an accomplished golfer, and his brother Hamad, also a member of the Oman National Team, golf runs in the family.

Alongside Bill Longmuir, a Senior Tour player who has a long association with Oman, Al Ruhmy is sure to create a stir locally when he makes his Challenge Tour debut and he cannot wait.

“I was very excited, and so were my father and my brother and all my family, when I received a sponsor’s invitation to play in the National Bank of Oman Golf Classic,” he said.

“It’s a wonderful achievement for Oman to host a European Challenge Tour event so soon in our golfing history and I’m really looking forward to playing in the tournament.

“It’s also exciting for me to be, possibly, the only Omani national in the field. The event will be a wonderful opportunity for Oman to showcase what it has to offer the tourist and the golfer.”

Oman currently has three different golf courses with Ghala Valley Golf Course, Almouj Golf The Wave and Muscat Hills Country Club and soon Muscat will have a fourth golf club, a nine-hole course at Ras Al Hamra, only 15 minutes or so from the airport, which should be ready for play next year.
