As the Irish Open is set for a thrilling climax, Royal Portrush’s Stephanie Meadow captured the Ladies British Amateur Championship on Saturday to complete a unique treble for the small Northern Irish town after Alan Dunbar’s victory in the Amateur Championship last week and Darren Clarke’s success at last year’s Open Championship.
The 20 year old overcame Spain's Rocio Sanchez Lobato 4&3 in the final at Carnoustie with an impressive display of sub-par golf completed at the gallop - the match was completed in under three hours.
Meadow, a student at the University of Alabama and Number 20 in the World Amateur Rankings, was three up after only six holes against her 19 year old opponent, Rocio Sanchez Lobato from Marbella and the University of Georgia, ranked Number 193, and the Northern Irish woman never trailed throughout an absorbing match.
The victory earns Meadow a place in the field for next week's US Women's Open and the Ricoh Women's British Open at Hoylake in September.
