Course Changes at Royal Birkdale
Changes to the course at Royal Birkdale will add at least one extra shot to each round at this year’s Open Championship, the Royal and Ancient predicted last week.
Leonard Heads Record Entry for Open
Justin Leonard, the defending champion, is one of the record entry of 2336 players for this year’s Open Championship which will be played at Royal Birkdale Golf Club, Southport, on July 16 - 19. The total represents a 9.5% increase on the previous record of 2133 set at Royal Troon last year.
Mark O’Meara followed his success in the Masters Tournament by winning the 127th Open Golf Championship in a play-off against American compatriot Brian Watts at Royal Birkdale.
Then O’Meara declared: “This golf course is a very special place for my family and myself. I came here in 1987 and won the Lawrence Batley International on the European Tour, and now I have won what in my opinion is the most special Championship there is. I can’t say how proud I am to be the 1998 Open champion.”
