Live Commentary

17:17
That’s a wrap, I believe they say. Thanks for joining us on Tournament Tracker this week in Dubai and these last three weeks in the Middle East. What a fantastic three tournaments we have been treated to, a true showcase of what The European Tour is all about. Congrats to Rock, Lawrie and now to Cabrera-Bello.
17:06
The tone for the victory was set on day one when he shot his stunning nine under par 63, and he has finished it off in style with a four under par 68 and an overall score of 18 under par. Gallacher and Westwood one shot back in the end after three under par 69 and two under par 70, respectively and Westwood will be ruing chances missed.
16:53
IT’s ALL OVER! Gallacher’s putt slips by the hole to leave the Scot stranded at 17 under par and thus crowns Rafael Cabrera-Bello the 2012 Omega Dubai Desert Classic winner by one shot. Very, very well deserved second European Tour victory for the Spaniard in his 151st European Tour event.
16:49
A good effort from Westwood but it’s not quite there. How frustrating for the Englishman, who has been supreme tee to green once again, but the shortest stick in the back has deserted him today. Here comes Gallacher…
16:46
Not what the doctor ordered, I’m afraid. Westwood’s touch deserts him with the chip and he is a good 20 feet past the hole. Still an outside chance of birdie for the Englishman with Gallacher yet to putt.
16:43
The European Tour says: Great reception for the final group at the 18th green and it's absolutely packed. Thrilling finale. #DubaiDesertClassic
16:43
Knowing he needs at least a birdie at the last to force a play-off with Cabrera-Bello, Westwood pulls his iron approach somewhat and is in the fringe to the left of the green. Needs to get it up and down to stay in contention. Gallacher with a nice pitch on, over the flag by about 15 feet and he’ll also need that to make a play-off.
16:38
Very exciting now with Westwood and Gallacher further up the fairway. Westwood crushed his in the centre and will be thinking about going for the green in two, while Gallacher has to lay up after finding the rough from the tee.
16:37
It is a par to finish for Cabrera-Bello after he shows a nice touch to lag his first putt down the hill and there is the clubhouse target. Great round again today from the Spaniard who finishes four under for the day and -18 for the tournament. Over to you Messrs Westwood and Gallacher. Well played that man.
16:34
Cabrera-Bello plays it safe with his third and pitches it up at the top of the 18th green and he’ll have a fast downhiller to come. Par more realistic for the Spaniard now. So for Westwood and Gallacher, when is a door not a door? When it’s ajar. Thrilling conclusion.
16:31
Meanwhile at the 17th green there are more putting problems as Westwood and Gallacher both fail to convert fairly straightforward birdie opportunities. The Scot’s was the slightly harder and faded right at the death, but Westwood’s never really looked like going in. Both remain one off Cabrera-Bello’s lead with the 18th to come.
16:29
Cabrera-Bello found the left hand rough off the tee at 18 and so obviously decided to lay up with his second. Safe in the fairway and still a real chance of birdie.
16:27
After a very, very trying day, the Dubai Desert Classic champion of 2009 concludes his round with a birdie at the last. Excellent back nine, though, from the Northern Irishman, that included four birdies and he finishes 14 under in a tie for fifth place currently, along with George Coetzee who finished a few moments before with a -2 70.
16:24
Lovely response from Lee Westwood, who puts his second to 17 to around the same distance as Cabrera-Bello had for his birdie. Real chance coming up for the Englishman, and another for the Scotsman Stephen Gallacher, who also plays a nice, if a little short, pitch up the green.
16:21
The European Tour says: The traditional Sunday pin on the 18th coming up for our leaders at the #DubaiDesertClassic 10 on, 31 from the left http://t.co/fOpCrx31
16:19
IN SHE GOES FOR CABRERA-BELLO AND INTO THE LEAD! First man to 18 under par after the Spaniard converts his fine approach with a solid putt at the 17th. Par five 18th coming up and he’ll want another one there, you’d imagine. One shot lead over Westwood and Gallacher with two holes to play.
16:14
Lots of missed chances today for Westwood on the greens. Gallacher did well, by the way, rolling in a ten footer to save his par and stay in a share of the lead at 17 under par.
16:13
How about that. Wonderful approach stops stone-dead at the 17th and a very makeable birdie putt coming up for Cabrera-Bello as another putt fails to drop one hole back for Lee Westwood. After a fine drive and a similarly good approach, the Englishman only had probably five or six foot for birdie and failed to convert.
16:06
Denmark’s Soren Kjeldsen sets the clubhouse target at -14 after finishing with a five under par 67, the lowest of the day so far. Well played sir.
16:01
Fine, fine work and nerve from Cabrera-Bello. A marvellous escape from the trees lands just short of the green, a lovely chip up leaves a short putt that he knocks in to save par. Superb effort from the Spaniard.
15:50
Trouble for Cabrera-Bello at the par four 16th as he splays his tee shot way off target and he’s in the midst of a lot of trees right now. A real test of the Spaniard’s nerve and creativity to try and escape with par here, while Westwood and Gallacher card solid pars at the short 15th.
15:45
Par for all three members of the final group at the 14th, and another on the hole ahead for Cabrera-Bello means we are still locked at 17 under par. Are we heading towards the fifth ever play-off decider at the Dubai Desert Classic, and the second in successive years?
15:38
Very unlucky for George Coetzee at the par four 16. Having six foot left for his par the ball looks for all the world like it’s in the hole, before horse shoeing all the way round and back out. Drops back down to -14 now.
15:34
Following on from Jason’s point below, it is worth a quick look at how the leaders have played the last five holes over the course of the week: Cabrera-Bello – six under par; Gallacher – five under, including a hole-in-one at 15 on day one; Westwood – four under. Horses for courses?
15:30
Should Gallacher win it would be the second consecutive Scottish win, following Lawrie in Qatar. The last time there were two successive Scottish winners in back-to-back events was Andrew Coltart and Colin Montgomerie in 2001 at the Great North Open and Irish Open respectively.
15:25
Oh my, incredible scenes on the 13th green. After finding the putting surface in two blows, Stephen Gallacher proceeds to absolutely drain his putt for eagle, from at least 30 foot, flush in the centre of the hole. The Scotsman moves into a share of the lead at -17, along with Westwood who makes birdie. Three-way tie at the top again!
15:19
JASON FAGE says: @European_Tour @rcabrerabello 6 Birdies over those last 3 holes so far this week makes him fav..#backnineonsunday
15:17
Only a par at the par five 13th for our leader Cabrera-Bello, largely thanks to his second which found deep rough at the greenside. Par must feel like bogey on the 13th, the easiest hole this week at 4.51. Up to now 15 eagles and 199 birdies made on it this week! Still leads by one from Westwood, though.
15:14
Forget about birdies and eagles, it was a marauding fox that stopped the final group teeing off at the long 13th after Westwood made par at the 12th. Shot gone for Siem, though, who made something of a nonsense of the – albeit very tricky – 12th hole.
15:11
The European Tour says: Should @RCabreraBello win it would be the third consecutive Spanish win at #DubaiDesertClassic following Jimenez in 2010 and Quiros in 2011.
15:05
The European Tour says: The fantastic view players get when teeing it up at the 14th at Emirates GC. #DubaiDesertClassic http://t.co/qjzbsEIZ
14:57
CABRERA-BELLO MOVES INTO THE LEAD! Fantastic stuff from the Spaniard, who goes to 17 under par and into the outright lead after making birdie at the brutish par four 12th with a silky right to lefter, his second in succession and that’s a one shot lead from Westwood. Superb.
14:55
So, very congested out there right now. Coetzee takes another step up into a share of third at 15 under par after making another birdie – his third of the day – at the par five 13th hole. Thomas Bjorn is not out of this either, by the way, the Dane goes birdie-par-eagle on the 13th and he is back to -13.
14:52
So very close to an instant response from Lee Westwood on the short 11th hole but no dice for the Englishman. After putting his tee shot just over and to the right of the flag, the ball has a look in the hole on the way past but decides against dropping. Remains at -16 and a lead of one.
14:48
Definitely harder scoring conditions out there today as the wind gusts around the Emirates GC. Best round of the day so far is 68 (-4) from Jamie Donaldson, Nicholas Thompson, Ignacio Garrido and Fred Couples. Kjeldsen could be on course to beat that, though.
14:45
Scotland’s Gallacher, however, did make birdie at the tenth to move up into a tie for third place at 15 under par.
14:44
We have a new tie for the lead in Dubai! After a solid tee shot at the par three 11th, Cabrera-Bello rolls in the birdie putt as smoothly as you like and that moves the Spaniard into a tie for first place as Westwood fails to make birdie at the par five tenth after finding the bunker with his second. -16 still the magic mark right now.
14:28
Denmark’s Soren Kjeldsen progressing well under the radar. The three-time European Tour winner posted back-to-back birdies at the tenth and 11th, another at 14, and is four under for the day and tied for seventh at -13.
14:24
Holding firm is Lee Westwood, who pars the ninth after seeing his birdie putt from the fringe not trouble the hole. He is, however, back in the lead on his own after playing partner Marcel Siem fails to get up and down and he slips back to -15 alongside Cabrera-Bello.
14:19
Alvaro Quiros concludes his defence with a level par 72 to finish five under par for the tournament and currently in a tie for 38th place. Just hasn’t quite been on his game in this year’s Desert Swing which is quite surprising considering his sterling record in the region.
14:17
South Africa’s George Coetzee going along very nicely today and he birdies the tenth hole to move to 14 under for the tournament and two shots off the lead. If he were to win it would mean South Africa would have won the Dubai Desert Classic five times, more than any other country.
14:13
Remember to get your vote in for January’s Shot of the Month to be in with a chance of getting your hands on a great hamper of European Tour prizes. Six crackers to choose from here: http://bit.ly/w4IyhR
14:10
Cabrera-Bello had an instant chance to make it a three-way tie at the top but his birdie putt on the ninth pulls up just short and he remains at -5. On the same green, shots gone for Jamieson and Sjoholm, and they drop back to -13 and -12 respectively.
14:06
Nothing dropping at the moment here in Dubai. Westwood’s birdie putt at the eighth slips by and WE HAVE MOVEMENT AT THE TOP PEOPLE! Marcel Siem, after a stunning approach to around four foot, knocks in the remaining birdie putt to move into a share of the lead at 16 under par. Excellent work from the German.
13:59
Double bogey for McIlroy at nine and that is surely that for his title challenge, barring something extraordinary on the back nine.
13:57
The European Tour says: If @SwedishTORO wins he'd be the 1st player to win on The European Tour wearing Plus Fours since Rodger Davis at1993 Cannes Open #OldSchool
13:53
That just about sums up McIlroy’s day so far. After a perfect drive at the par four ninth the Northern Irishman puts his second straight in the drink. Not a happy bunny right now. Shot gone for Gallacher at seven too, while someone going in the right direction is his compatriot Scott Jamieson, who holes from the fringe at eight to go to -14.
13:49
ET Virtual Eye says: McIlroy group on the 9th hole http://t.co/7sJNzQ1J
13:44
A par apiece for Westwood and co. at the tricky sixth – ranked the second hardest hole this week after the ninth – and there aren’t a great deal of birdies on the front nine here in Dubai and only one shot gained on the lead so far today through six holes.
13:37
Fantastic putt from Joel Sjoholm at the par three seventh hole, a big right to left turn and in she goes. The Swede goes to 14 under par for the tournament and two behind Westwood’s lead. It’s getting congested out there and the championship is all for the taking for whoever can start finding the red numbers.
