Marcel Siem put together four highly-impressive rounds to claim his second European Tour title at the Alstom Open de France last week and we take a look inside his bag to find out how he did it.

On the hugely testing Albatross Course at Le Golf National, just outside Paris, with its tight fairways, numerous water hazards and penal rough, one of the keys to Siem’s success was undoubtedly his accuracy from the tee, a category in which the German  finished second in the Genworth Statistics, hitting 73.2 per cent of the fairways throughout the week.

Siem also ranked fifth in Driving Distance with an average of 302.1 yards and when combined with his superb accuracy last week in France, his game clearly had the building blocks for victory.

And although Siem clearly showed his brilliance off the tee, he was also able to back it up with his approaches and shots around the greens, coming fifth in Greens in Regulation, hitting 73.6 per cent and also 11th in Putts per Round where he averaged 28.8.

With such excellent consistency in every aspect of his game over the week it is clear why Siem managed to capture his first European Tour title since 2004.

When compared to his season statistics, it was a somewhat surprising improvement in terms of his driving accuracy, having ranked 191st in Driving Accuracy this year after only hitting on average 52.8 per cent of fairways during his other tournaments in 2012.

However, his driving distance has been consistently high up in the rankings, ranking at 23rd at the moment, averaging 297.6.

This backs up the idea that although length is important to triumph in any form of golf, accuracy can often be the key, in this case helping Siem win for the first time in eight years, an excellent performance that could certainly inspire the 31 year old to his best-ever season on The European Tour, and to further victories in the future.
