The 2018 Ryder Cup has claimed another prestigious honour after being named the ‘Best Sports Event of the Year – Overseas’ at the Sport Business Awards in London.
More than 270,000 fans watched Europe defeat the United States at Le Golf National, in Paris, last September when The Ryder Cup was played in continental Europe for just the second time following Valderrama, Spain, in 1997. It was the most successful Ryder Cup to be staged on European soil and captured the imagination of fans globally, with more than 22 billion social media impressions across the week.
Representatives from Ryder Cup Europe were presented with the award at a ceremony held at The Brewery in London in front of an audience consisting of CEOs, athletes and industry leaders from across the United Kingdom.
The Sports Business Awards were founded in 2017 and seek to recognise the outstanding off-pitch achievements of those working behind the scenes in sport, including organisations and individuals involved in the planning, administration, marketing, design, technology and implementation side of sports.
It was the second consecutive year the European Tour, which is the managing partner of Ryder Cup Europe, has been recognised at the Sports Business Awards after the Tour’s Access All Areas was named Best in Sports Media 12 months ago.
The award is also further recognition for The Ryder Cup, which was also named Event of the Year at the BT Sport Industry Awards in April.
Guy Kinnings, European Ryder Cup Director, said: “We are very honoured to accept this award, which recognises all the hard work behind the scenes by so many people who contributed to the resounding success of The 2018 Ryder Cup.”
