Biography

Enjoyed an outstanding amateur career before announcing his arrival to the professional world as a 20 year old at the 1988 Benson and Hedges International Open by eagling the first hole of a sudden-death play-off against the 1987 Open Champion Nick Faldo. Collected his other two European Tour career victories – the Dunhill British Masters and the Scandinavian Masters – in 1993, finishing seventh on the Money List. The same year he turned in a tremendous Ryder Cup performance, winning three points out of four including a singles win over Corey Pavin, who will captain the American Team this year. Remained a consistent performer on The European Tour for the next decade. After playing a vital role as Vice-Captain to Ian Woosnam at The 2006 Ryder Cup, he focused on relaunching his playing career. Turned to the Challenge Tour in 2007 and discovered he still had that winning touch as he secured two wins at the Credit Suisse Challenge and the AGF Allianz Golf Open de Toulouse – the latter on his 40th birthday – as he finished the year in 12th place on the Rankings. Returned to the Challenge Tour in 2009, winning the Credit Suisse Challenge for a second time to finish 11th in the Rankings.
