The Eurobet Seve Ballesteros Trophy was unveiled at Sunningdale as the two teams for the inaugural match completed their preparations for the first day’s play of the Old Course on the superb Berkshire course.
Ken Schofield, Executive Director of the European Tour, said: “This week launches another glowing chapter in European golf history. I think it is widely acknowledged that Severiano Ballesteros was the playing heart of many European Ryder Cup teams. Many people have regarded him as Europe’s Arnold Palmer and I think golf can not say any more than that.”
The trophy bears the image of Ballesteros in familiar fist-clenching pose after he holed the winning putt in the 1984 Open Championship at St.Andrews.
Ballesteros will captain the Continental Europe team with Colin Montgomerie leading Great Britain and Ireland. Montgomerie also paid his opposite number a glowing tribute by saying: “That stance of Seve reminds us all of that famous Sunday at St.Andrews in 1984. I am honoured to be part of this celebration of European golf.”
