SUNDAY MAY 11, - 2014 – MADEIRA ISLANDS OPEN – PORTUGAL - BPI 

  • His first European Tour International Schedule victory in his 35th European Tour event. 
  • Moves to €132,491 in The Race to Dubai and into the top 300 of the Official World Golf Ranking from 529th. 
  • His victory beats his previous best European Tour performance of tied 11th in 2014 the Nelson Mandela Championship presented by ISPS Handa 
  • Becomes the seventh first-time winner of the 2014 season. They are: Morten Orum Madsen (South African Open Championship hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni), George Coetzee (Joburg Open), Jason Day (WGC – Accenture Match Play Championship), Patrick Reed (WGC – Cadillac Championship), Marco Crespi (NH Collection Open), Alexander Levy (Volvo China Open) and Daniel Brooks (Madeira Islands Open – Portugal – BPI). 
  • His victory comes in his fifth appearance in the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal – BPI. 
  • This victory beats his previous best finish in the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal – BPI of tied 48th in 2010. 
  • Graduated from the 2013 European Tour Qualifying School Final Stage. Is the second 2013 graduate to win on The 2014 European Tour, following Marco Crespi at the NH Collection Open. 
  • Becomes the 11th different player to make the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal – BPI their first European Tour title. He follows: Santiago Luna (1995), Pedro Linhart (1999), Niclas Fasth (2000), Bradley Dredge (2003), Chris Hanell (2004), Daniel Vancsik (2007), Estanislao Goya (2009), James Morrison (2010), Ricardo Santos (2012) and Peter Uihlein (2013). 
  • Follows Mark James (1993), Peter Mitchell (1997) and James Morrison (2010), as English winners of the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal – BPI. 
  • Becomes the 12th player this season to win after making up a final round deficit. 

OTHER FACTS 

  • Wins the play-off in what was his first European Tour experience of extra holes, in what was only the second play-off in the history of the event. The previous one was in 2008 when Alastair Forsyth beat Hennie Otto. 
  • Becomes the 21st different player to win from the 21 events played in the 2014 season. 
  • Becomes the 21st different player to win the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal – BPI. 
  • The 286th English victory in European Tour history. The 89th different English player to win in European Tour history. 
  • Becomes the third English victory this season. They are: Ross Fisher (Tshwane Open), Lee Westwood (Maybank Malaysian Open) and Daniel Brooks (Madeira Islands Open – Portugal – BPI). 
  • Becomes the 37th different qualifying school graduate to win the year after graduation in European Tour history. 
  • The 44th European Tour victory by qualifying school graduates to win the year after graduation. 
  • Continues his consecutive streak of nine successive European Tour cuts made this season. (Has made every cut this season). 
  • Gains a European Tour exemption until the end of 2015. 
  • Gains his largest European Tour prize of €100,000. 
  • His second win as a professional. 
  • Gains a place in the 2015 Volvo Golf Champions. 
  • Becomes the tenth European Tour win of the 2014 season by a former Challenge Tour player. They are: Morten Ørum Madsen (South African Open Championship hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni), Thomas Björn (Nedbank Golf Challenge), Louis Oosthuizen (Volvo Golf Champions), Pablo Larrazábal (Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship), Stephen Gallacher (Omega Dubai Desert Classic), Ross Fisher (Tshwane Open), Marco Crespi (NH Collection Open), Alexander Levy (Volvo China Open) and Felipe Aguilar (The Championship at Laguna National) and Daniel Brooks (Madeira Islands Open – Portugal – BPI). 
  • Becomes the 339th European Tour victory by a former Challenge Tour player.
