Ian Poulter continued one of the most impressive starts to a season in his brilliant career as he secured a tie for third at the WGC-Mexico Championship.

The Englishman enjoyed a hugely impressive Desert Swing, finishing sixth in Abu Dhabi, third in Dubai and sixth again in Saudi Arabia to sit in the top ten in the Race to Dubai Rankings Presented by Rolex.

Poulter has started impressively before, most notably in 2010 and 2013, but this is the first time in his European Tour career that he has secured four consecutive top sixes.

He went 68-68-69-68 at Chapultepec Golf Club and was delighted with his putting after another impressive week.

"My last three starts were sixth, third, sixth, so I was going six-three-six-three, right?" he said.

It's good, it's a great finish. I'm happy where my golf is - Ian Poulter

"It's good, it's a great finish. I'm happy where my golf is, I'm happy where everyone else is, and I'm just enjoying myself.

"I had a week off skiing. I went back home, hit balls, didn't really hit it very well. Came here, didn't feel great, so I didn't do an awful lot of putting, to be honest.

"I can't give you the answer to why I putted nicely this week. I think my pace was good, I felt comfortable with the speed of the greens and the way the slopes all kind of sloped a bit."

Joost Luiten gathered some momentum ahead of the defence of his Oman Open title next week with a closing 64 that handed him a third top ten in four starts.

Birdies on the fifth, sixth, ninth, tenth, 11th, 12th, 14th, 15th and 16th were book-ended by bogeys on the fourth and last, and the Dutchman was happy with his surge through the field.

"I was in the middle of the field and I just thought 'I have to go for it today and see if I can shoot a low score', and I got it to eight under," he said. "Unfortunately a silly bogey on the last, which I'm really annoyed with, but that's golf.

"I didn't really look at the leaderboard, I just need to keep on making birdies because I'm so far behind of the top guys. So I was just thinking about birdies, not about where I was on the leaderboard and that worked out well.

"I could have made a couple more but I rolled in a couple of nice putts as well, so I think I need to be happy with the score today."
