20 Photos of Arnie at Augusta

There will still be Magnolia Lane. There will still be Green Jackets. There will still be a Champions Dinner. There will still be a Masters Tournament. However, this year, it will be without the King.

This year's Masters will be the first since 1954 that hasn't featured Arnold Palmer in some capacity. The four-time champion passed away in September last year and since that day the golfing world has shared in mourning the loss of one of the most influential players the game has ever seen.

Patrons this week will receive a free badge with the text "I'm a member of Arnie's Army" and several other tributes have been planned by the officials at Augusta. Here at EuropeanTour.com, we have delved into the archives to find the best photos

20. Jack and Arnie

Between them they have 10 Green Jackets and 34 top tens at Augusta. We're not sure why they were laughing in this moment of the 1987 Masters but clearly Jack Nicklaus and ARnold Palmer felt comfortable at the year's first Major.

19. Bunkered

By 1992, Arnold Palmer was all but finished playing competitive golf but hundreds of patrons at Augusta would still follow his rounds each year. This photo was taken during the first round that year with Palmer in his classic yellow polo shirt.

18. New Equipment

Having played at the Masters every year from 1955 to 2004, Arnold Palmer saw and influenced a lot of changes in the game. In this photo, taken during the 2004 tournament, The King discussed his latest driver with Davis Love III. The latter would go on to finish in the top ten that year.

17. Hogan's Bridge

The Hogan Bridge at Augusta carries players and caddies across Rae's Creek to the 12th green. It is one of the most famous images on the course and was dedicated to Ben Hogan, a two-time Masters champion, in 1958 to commemorate his record low-score of 273 shot in 1953. Palmer would have crossed it hundreds of time over his career but this was one of his last crossings back in his final competitive appearance in 2004.

16. On The Balcony

If Arnie wasn't out on the course or signing autographs, there was a good chance he would be sat in or around the clubhouse laughing and sharing stories with Augusta members or other players. This photo of Palmer with then-Augusta chairman Hootie Johnson was taken back in 2002.

15. Par Three Course

In his latter years, whilst he wasn't able to compete or play in the actual Masters tournament, Arnie would still tee it up on Wednesday in the Par Three Contest. Pictured on the green here, alongside Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player in 2009, The King clearly still drew eyeballs at Augusta.

14. Arnie and Tiger

Palmer was 66 years old when Tiger Woods made his Masters debut in 1996. The two shared many moments at Augusta and this photo was taken as the two enjoyed the Par Three Contest together back in 2004.

13. Hole in One

Later in that Par Three Contest round, Tiger thrilled the Augusta crowd by making a hole in one on the final hole. This photo caught the moment Tiger, Mark O'Meara and Palmer celebrated the ace.

12. Arnie's Army

Throughout the years, the legions of Arnold Palmer fans that came out to watch him action became known as Arnie's Army. This photo, taken in 2002, shows Palmer getting a standing ovation on the 18th hole from many members of the Army.

11. Entertained?

This mirror-image of Arnie and Jack came after Palmer holed a monster putt during the 2010 Par Three Contest. They might not have been playing for the Green Jacket in these days but both still entertained the crowds at Augusta.

This portrait of Palmer was taken outside the Augusta clubhouse in 2008. The flowers, the jacket and The King.

9. Nice Shot

Quite often Arnie would play in the Par Three Contest with various players and past winners of the Masters. In this photo in 2002, he shares a fist pump with 1998 champion Mark O'Meara having after hitting an impressive tee shot.

8. His own plaque

Visit Augusta today and behind the 16th tee you'll find a plaque erected in honour of Arnold Palmer. Having become the first four-time winner of the Masters, members at Augusta commissioned this plague, presented to Arnie in 1995, to sit by a water fountain on the course.

7. Honorary Starter

Starting in 1963, the Masters Tournament has started with opening tee shots from the honorary starters. Jock Hutchison and Fred McLeod were the first starters that year and Arnold Palmer continued the tradition when he began hitting the opening tee shot in 2007. This photo, captured back in 2015, would the last shot he would hit at Augusta.

6. Standing Out

Wherever he was in the world, Arnold Palmer had a knack for standing out. His game was thrilling, his fashion was colourful and in this photo back in 2013 sums that up well, showing Palmer, in his signature red cardigan, walking through the crowds at Augusta.

5. Sharing a laugh

A great photo taken on the 12th tee during practice at 1990 Masters with Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Greg Norman sharing a joke before taking on the famous par three.

4. Final Opening

Before starting his role as honorary starter, crowds always gathered to watch Arnie hit his first shot of the Masters. In this moment in 2004, Palmer was making his 50th and final start and hitting his opening tee shot for the final time.

3. All Eyes On The King

Anytime Palmer teed it up at Augusta his presence drew attention. This photo captured his honorary first tee shot in 2008. As you can see by the name board, he was the lone starter in those days. He would later be joined by Jack Nicklaus in 2010 and Gary Player in 2012.

2. Final Hole

In 2004, Palmer bid an emotional farewell to a streak of Masters appearances that dated back to 1954. He is one of only two players in history to have made 50 starts at Augusta and this photo shows his final tee shot.

1. Thumbs Up

One of the indelible images of Arnold Palmer at Augusta is the six-time champion walking the fairways, giving his fans a thumbs up. This photo was taken in 2002 and shows Arnie, head bowed, thanking those patrons who continued to cheer him down the fairways.
