Bapco Energies Bahrain Championship - day two digest

Calum Hill joins the history books, Sergio Garcia and Jacob Skov Olesen go on low-scoring runs and Yanhan Zhou throws a dart.

Everything you need to know from the second round at Royal Golf Club.

Hill equals course record to reach the summit

Calum Hill climbed to the summit at the halfway stage in Bahrain after equalling the course record. The Scot was flawless as he rolled in 11 birdies to match the lowest score at the Royal Golf Club, set by Brandon Robinson Thompson during the first round of this event last year, to take control at 16 under. He is four clear of overnight joint leader Freddy Schott, with Frenchman Ugo Coussaud in solo third at nine under. Hill said: "That’s obviously my best round in competitive golf, in tournament golf. I haven’t kept track of what I’ve shot in practice, but I think that’s up there as one of the best rounds I’ve played."

Garcia's glorious birdie blitz

Sergio Garcia looked in danger of failing to make the cut after two dropped shots and a birdie on his first eight holes left him on one under for the tournament. However, a stunning run of six birdies in seven holes from the ninth, in addition to another gain at the 17th, saw him climb up to a share of fourth at eight under, eight behind leader Hill. Here are his approach shots into the 11th and 15th amid his birdie blitz.

Three putts - 84 feet - three birdies

Game 26 all celebrated birdies from long, medium and short(ish) range at the penultimate hole. Julien Guerrier got the ball rolling from 55 feet before Garcia followed suit from 21 feet. Daniel Hillier had eight feet to complete the trio of birdies and he duly obliged.

Yanhan Zhou throws a dart

Yanhan Zhou, the 17-year-old Chinese player who has nine wins as a professional to his name, threw a dart at the par-three 12th as he chased the ace.

Olesen's roaring scoring run

Just like Garcia only moments before him, Denmark's Jacob Skov Olesen also enjoyed a brilliant run of scoring on the back nine as he carded four straight birdies from the tenth before an eagle at the 14th to go six under in the five-hole stretch. A dropped shot at the 15th and a double-bogey at the 17th threatened to derail his round, only to birdie the last to finish at six under for the tournament.
