Investec South African Open Championship: Day two digest

Francesco Laporta leads the way, Antoine Rozner's remarkable birdie and Freddy Schott sparkles with his shots.

Everything you need to know from Friday's action at Stellenbosch Golf Club.

Laporta leads at 'second home'

Francesco Laporta produced a brilliant 64 to open up a one-shot lead after the second round in South Africa. The Italian, who spent three years on the Sunshine Tour, carded seven birdies and a bogey to reach ten under for the tournament, one clear of Englishman Nathan Kimsey. He said: "I like South Africa, I like to play in South Africa. It's been my second home for a long time and this type of course and grass reminds me a bit of Johannesburg. The course is tough, the fairways are tight and there's a lot of rough so you have to be straight. I like it. I'm just trying to enjoy it like last week, I'm feeling good and two days to go."

Rozner's ridiculous birdie

Miles out of position from the fourth tee, Antoine Rozner produced this remarkable second shot for a tap-in birdie. Tres bien!

Great Freddy Schott-s

Freddy Schott could not have come much closer without it going in for a hole-in-one at the par-three 13th.

The German then produced this chip-in birdie at the last to give himself a chance of making the cut at one-over par, but he was agonisingly one shot shy of playing this weekend.

Ayora's angelic eagle

Angel Ayora is one of the biggest hitters on the DP World Tour circuit, and he made the 585-yard par-five fifth look easy with this eagle.

Du Plessis sets new course record

Hennie du Plessis edged closer to a $100,000 bonus after carding the lowest round of the week thanks to his seven-under 63 on Friday. The Course Record Presented by Nexo was introduced last season, starting at $10,000 and rolling over each week until a player breaks the record low round during that event. It rolled over to a tenth week in South Africa but with no course record at Stellenbosch Golf Club, that means the prize pot will be awarded to the player who cards the lowest round by the end of play on Sunday. Home hopeful Du Plessis had a colourful card with ten birdies and three dropped shots to climb up the leaderboard and sit three adrift of leader Laporta. He joked: "I hope there's placing for the rest of the week, that's the only way it would stand! I definitely think in the early morning there is a low score out there. We will see."
