A bronze for Bernard

A life size bronze sculpture of Bernard Gallacher OBE, commissioned by the Directors of Wentworth Club from the renowned sculptor David Wynne OBE, was unveiled today by the Club’s Chairman, Elliott Bernerd.

Bernard Gallacher retired last December after 27 years as Wentworth’s Professional. Throughout his golfing career he has received the highest accolades : playing in five World Cups, making eight successive Ryder Cup appearances between 1969 and 1983, and captaining the European Ryder Cup team in 1991, 1993 and 1995.

Bernard said, "David Wynne paid great attention to detail, right down to the club and golf ball. It took a year to complete the maquette, and I had many sittings in his studio in Putney which I thoroughly enjoyed. It is a great honour to be the only British golfer depicted in this way."

The statue of Bernard teeing-off is positioned on the 1st tee of Wentworth’s West Course. Willy Bauer, Chief Executive of Wentworth Group Holdings, said "We thought we ought to keep Bernard with us at Wentworth forever. He has done so much for the Club, the sport, young people and in bringing the Ryder Cup back to Europe; the statue seems an entirely fitting tribute to him".
