The Alfred Dunhill Cup International Advisory Committee has announced the players selected to represent the 16 countries competing in the Alfred Dunhill Cup over the Old Course at St Andrews from October 7-10.
South Africa, the defending champions who will be going for the first hat-trick in the 15 year history of the event, will be fielding the same team that has won the Alfred Dunhill Cup for the past two years: Ernie Els, the World numer six, South African Open Champion, David Frost and the current Novotel Perrier Open de France Champion, Retief Goosen.
The United States, three times winners of the tournament, will be represented by the `1999 US Open Champion, Payne Stewart, Mark O’’Meara, the 1998 US Masters and Open Champion. The third member of the team will be announced shortly.
Scotland, will be led by the current Volvo Order of Merit numer one and World number three, Colin Montgomerie, together with the 1999 Open Champion, Paul Lawrie and Gary Orr.
José Maria Olazábal, the 1999 US Masters Champion will lead a strong Spanish team comprising Miguel Angel Jiménez, a member of the current European Ryder Cup team and teenage sensation Sergio Garcia who has made such a dramatic start to his professional career winning the Murphy’’s Irish Open and finishing second behind Tiger Woods in the recent US PGA Championship.
Mark James, the European Ryder Cup Team Captain, will lead the England team of Lee Westwood, winner of three European Tour events this year and ranked number five in the World, and David Howell, winner earlier this year of the Dubai Desert Classic.
The full line-up includes six of the top ten players in the world. The 16 teams in the Alfred Dunhill Cup, sponsored by Alfred Dunhill, the leading name in luxury for men, will be drawn into four groups for the first three days of Round Robin play. The leading team in each group will go forward to the semi-finals to be played on Sunday morning (October 10), followed by the 18 hole final in the afternoon.
Prize money will total 1,400,000 euro (£1,000,000) with 140,000 euro (£100,000) going to each member of the winning team. The Alfred Dunhill Cup will be televised in the UK by Sky Sports with over six hours live coverage on all four days of the tournament which will be seen in some 60 countries worldwide.
